Il Como Women, a tre turni dalla fine della Serie B, è tornato in lotta per la promozione in massima serie, grazie all’1-0 sul Cittadella e alla contemporanea sconfitta del Brescia contro il Ravenna giunta nel recupero della quattordicesima giornata di campionato Se le lariane ora sono ad una sola lunghezza dalla capolista, il merito va ad Emma Lipman, difensore ex Verona, Roma, Florentia San Gimignano e Lazio classe ‘89 giunta quest’anno in terra comasca, ed autrice del gol vittoria di domenica, nonché il primo con la divisa biancazzurra. La nostra Redazione ha raggiunto Emma, che vanta quattrodici presenze con la nazionale di Malta, per risponderci ad alcune domande.
Emma quando hai capito di essere una calciatrice?
«Non credo di averlo mai fatto… quando ero più giovane il percorso per diventare una calciatrice professionista non era davvero un’opzione come lo è ora. Non avrei mai pensato di poter guadagnare soldi giocando a calcio, e il pensiero che diventasse il mio lavoro era impensabile. In effetti ho ancora dei momenti in cui penso tra me e me “come sono arrivata qui?”».
Perché hai voluto giocare in difesa?
«Se sono un difensore il merito è stato di mio fratello maggiore: quando ero più giovane giocavamo in giardino, e mi sono sempre divertita a cercare di conquistargli la palla. Ho sempre amato il lato fisico del gioco, i grandi contrasti, i colpi di testa e mettere il tuo corpo in gioco per proteggere la porta».
Prima di venire in Italia hai giocato in Inghilterra. Che differenze hai notato tra il calcio d’Oltremanica e quello del nostro paese?
«È passato un po’ di tempo dall’ultima volta che ho giocato in Inghilterra, e ovviamente il livello laggiù è migliorato enormemente. Ma per me la differenza più grande quando sono venuta in Italia è stata la fisicità del gioco, qui è stato un gioco più veloce piuttosto che una battaglia fisica. Anche se sento che le partite stanno diventando più fisiche, qui ora poiché più straniere si sono spostate per giocare in Italia».
In Italia avuto la possibilità di vestire le maglie di Verona, Roma, Florentia San Gimignano e Lazio. Quale delle due ti ha lasciato dei bei ricordi?
«Scherzo sul fatto che ho deciso di andare solo nei club delle città più belle! Per me non è solo questione di calcio ma anche di stile di vita, per questo ho passato cinque anni qui! Sono stata estremamente fortunata con i luoghi in cui ho vissuto e giocato in Italia, e ho tanti ricordi meravigliosi. Entrare nel Verona è stato un grande cambiamento di vita per me, quindi. quella sarà sempre una stagione speciale. Con la Roma ho fatto parte della storica prima squadra femminile, quello che abbiamo creato quell’anno con lo staff e le giocatrici è stato speciale! Anche a San Gimignano questo piccolo club che ha giocato in serie A ha unito una comunità, e ancora oggi quando ci torno vengo accolto da tutta la gente del posto! E ovviamente l’anno scorso con la Lazio che ha vinto la Serie B e guadagnato la promozione».
Cosa ti ha portato la scorsa estate a vestire la divisa del Como Women?
«Due conversazioni, una con il Mister e una con Miro Keci (il direttore generale). Dopo entrambe le telefonate ho sentito una vera sincerità riguardo alle loro parole e a ciò che volevano creare in questa stagione. Ancora oggi tutto quello che mi hanno detto al telefono è stato vero!».
Parliamo della gara vinta domenica dal Como sul Cittadella: quanto valgono questi tre punti?
«I tre punti contro il Cittadella sono stati grandi quanto i tre punti che abbiamo preso in tutte le nostre ultime sette partite. Dopo le tre sconfitte abbiamo lavorato tanto per migliorarci come squadra e anche individualmente. Penso che le tre vittorie della scorsa settimana contro Pro Sesto, Tavagnacco e Cittadella dimostrino quanto siamo cresciute, e questo grazie al momento difficile che abbiamo passato, e ne siamo uscite insieme».
Tu in questa partita sei stata determinante, perché hai messo a referto il gol-vittoria…
«È sempre bello segnare un gol, soprattutto perché giovedì non riuscivo a camminare dopo aver ricevuto un grande contrasto nella partita di Tavagnacco! Quindi devo ringraziare di cuore i nostri fantastici fisioterapisti Edo e Franci (Edoardo Lionetti e Francesca Sironi, ndr), che mi hanno aiutato a essere disponibile per quella gara».
Pensi che la squadra possa davvero vincere il campionato?
«Tutto è possibile nel calcio, e ovviamente ci crediamo ancora! Ma il nostro focus rimane sul percorso, e la cosa più importante è la prossima partita contro il Palermo».
Tra qualche giorno ospiterete il Palermo già retrocesso: cosa non bisognerà sottovalutare da questa partita?
«Non è una partita facile in Serie B, l’ho imparato l’anno scorso; quindi, dobbiamo rimanere concentrati e pronti per questo fine settimana. È importante continuare a giocare nel modo in cui sappiamo che funziona per noi con cuore, determinazione e stare insieme. Se riusciremo a farlo, allora sono sicura che faremo in una buona prestazione».
Nella tua carriera hai vestito la maglia della nazionale maltese: qual è la gara che ti ha regalato emozioni?
«Ce ne sono stati tanti, ma il mio esordio con Malta che è stato nel 2019 contro l’Italia sarà sempre il mio ricordo più prezioso. Ricordo ancora che stavo ascoltando l’inno nazionale, e mi sentivo come se fosse qualcun altro a fissare la bandiera, è stato un momento così magico per me che non dimenticherò mai!».
Come stai vedendo il calcio femminile italiano?
«Da quando sono qui, il gioco è cresciuto così tanto. Grazie al successo della Nazionale italiana e della Juventus in Champions League, il calcio italiano è diventato più appetibile per i giocatori di tutta Europa. Mentre il campionato diventa professionista, spero davvero che arrivino investimenti per migliorare le infrastrutture dei club come strutture di allenamento, palestre, aree fisioterapiche e campi. A mio avviso, per farlo salire di livello, alcuni club di serie A e la maggioranza di serie B hanno bisogno di aiuto per svilupparsi in questi ambiti».
Che persona sei fuori dal campo?
«Direi che sono una persona equilibrata e ottimista, continuo a lavorare sodo su me stessa per cercare di vedere i lati positivi in ogni situazione. Nel mondo del calcio è così facile perdersi quando le cose in campo non vanno bene; quindi, mi tengo a non sovrapporre il gioco e la vita, anche se non è sempre facile. Amo viaggiare, conoscere nuove persone, sperimentare nuove culture, leggere, scrivere, imparare. Anche se il calcio è una parte importante di me, non definisce chi sono».
Quali sono i sogni che vorresti realizzare?
«Sono un grande sognatrice, quindi ne ho tanti!! In questo momento il mio sogno è diventare la miglior giocatrice che posso essere, e godermi il mio viaggio calcistico mentre le gambe vanno avanti! Dopo di che, credo che tutto sia possibile. Il calcio è stato il mio più grande insegnante nella vita, e sono sicura che continuerà ad esserlo. Attraverso il gioco ho avuto così tante esperienze incredibili, e incontrato persone straordinarie. Mi piacerebbe continuare a contribuire alla mia più grande passione, aiutando lo sviluppo di giocatrici più giovani che stanno entrando in un gioco molto più sviluppato rispetto a quando ho iniziato. Come sembra in questo momento non sono sicura, ma sono fiduciosa che troverò la mia strada».

Emma when did you realize you were a footballer?
«I don’t think I ever did..when I was younger the pathway to become a professional footballer was not really an option as it is now. I never thought I could earn money from playing football and the thought of it becoming my job was unthinkable. In fact I still have moments now where I think to myself “how did I get here”!?».
Why did you want to play defense?
«I think becoming a defender was down to my older brother, when I was younger we would play in the garden and I always enjoyed trying to win the ball from him. Ive always loved the physical side of the game, the big tackles, headers and putting your body on the line to protect the goal!».
Before coming to Italy you played in England. What differences have you noticed between football from the other side of the Channel and that of our country?
«It’s been a while since I’ve played in England now and obviously the level over there has improved massively! But for me the biggest difference when I came to Italy was the physicality of the game, it was more quick play here rather then a physical battle…although I do feel the games becoming more physical here now as more foreigners have moved to play in Italy».
In Italy he had the opportunity to wear the jerseys of Verona, Rome, Florentia San Gimignano and Lazio. Which of the two left you with fond memories?
«I joke that I only decide to go to the clubs with the most beautiful City’s!! For me it’s not just about the football but also the lifestyle, for that reason I have spent 5 years here! I’ve been extremely fortunate with the places I have lived and played in Italy and I have so many wonderful memories. Joining Verona was a big life change for me so this will always be a special season. With AS Roma I was part of the historic first Women’s Team, what we created that year with the staff and players was special! Also in San Gimignano, this small club playing in Serie A united a community and still today when I go back there I am welcomed by all the locals! And of course last year with Lazio winning Serie B and gaining promotion».
What brought you last summer to wear the Como Women uniform?
«Two conversations, one with the Mister and one with Keci (the general director). After both phone calls I felt a real sincerity about their words and what they wanted to create this season. Still to this day everything they said to me on the phone has been true!!!».
Let’s talk about the match won by Como on Sunday on the Cittadella: how much are these three points worth?
«The three points against Cittadella were just as big as the three points we’ve taken from all of our last seven games. After the three loses we have worked so hard to better ourselves as a team and also individually. I think the three wins last week against Pro Sesto, Tavagnacco and Cittadella show how much we have grown and that’s thanks to the difficult time we went through and came out of together».
You were decisive in this match, because you scored the winning goal…
«Its always great to score a goal…especially as on the Thursday I couldn’t walk after getting a big hit in the Tavagnacco game! So I have to give a big thank you to our amazing physios Edo and Franci (Edoardo Lionetti and Francesca Sironi) who helped me be available for that game».
Do you think the team can really win the championship?
«Anything is possible in football and of course we still believe! But our focus remains on the process and the most important thing is the next game against Palermo».
In a few days you will host the already relegated Palermo: what should not be underestimated by this one match?
«There is no easy game in Serie B, I learnt that last year, so we have to stay focused and ready for this weekend. Its important that we continue to play the way we know works for us with heart, determination and staying together. If we do that then I am confident of a good performance».
In your career you wore the Maltese national team jersey: what is the match that has given you emotions?
«There have been many but my debut for Malta which was in 2019 against Italy will always be my most treasured memory. I still remember standing listening to the National Anthem and feeling as if It was not me staring at the flag, it was such a magical moment for me one I will never forget!!».
How are you seeing Italian women’s football?
«Since I’ve played here the game has grown so much. Thanks to the success of the Italian National team and Juventus in the Champions league, Italian football has become more appealing for players all around Europe. As the league turns professional I really hope with that comes investment to improve infrastructure at clubs such as training facilities, gyms, physio areas and pitches. In my opinion for the game to go to the next level some clubs in Serie A and the majority in Serie B need help to develop in these areas»..
What person are you off the pitch?
«I would say I am a balanced and optimistic person, I continue to work hard on myself to try and see the positives in any situation. In the football world it’s so easy to get lost when things aren’t going good on the pitch, so I make it a point not to overlap playing and life, although it’s not always easy. I love travelling, meeting new people, experiencing new cultures, reading, writing, learning. Although football is a big part of me it does not define who I am».
What are the dreams you would like to fulfill?
«I am a big dreamer so I have so many!!Right now my dream is to become the best player I can be and to enjoy my playing journey while the legs keep going! After then I believe anything is possible. Football has been my greatest teacher in life and I am sure it will continue to be so. Through the game I have had so many incredible experiences and met some amazing people..I would love to continue contributing to my greatest passion through helping with the development of younger players who are coming in to a much more developed game then when I started. How that looks right now Im not sure but I am confident I will find my way».
